Since 1994, the non-profit organisation ‘Velo’ promotes the bicycle as an ecological means of transport in the city by recycling, renting and repairing bikes for students in the city of Leuven.

In order to encourage bicycle use amongst students in the city of Ghent, the non-profit organisation Student and Mobility offers a whole range of bike services such as bike rent, bike repair sheds, bike wash, key service and bike pumps to Ghent students.

Since 2002, the city of Chambéry has introduced a bike station aimed to increase the number of cycling trips and multimodal journeys throughout the city. The bike station situated near the railway station offers cyclists two services, bike rent for short or long term, and guarded bicycle storage. The project proves to be a success especially amongst students, generating over 100 000 rented cycling trips every year. The guarded bicycle storage service leaded to an important increase in multimodal trips (train and bicycle) for the city.

Services in all different kinds are considered to be “normal” for cars, however it is not when we come to bicycles. The bicycle is often not seen as an instrument of traffic hence the VSF e.V. wants to implement certain services for bikes as a standard to make cycling in traffic more attractive.

In the city of Bremerhaven a campaign tries to combine bicycle services with tourist information. To give visitors and inhabitants of Bremerhaven the opportunity to combine various services for bicycles (for example parking areas) and tourist information a mobile centre was established to increase the attractiveness and improvement of the supply for bikers.
